Construction Zone Accidents - Often Preventable

Avoiding construction Zone Accidents

Many of us have experienced running behind schedule, leaving the house in a hurry to meet somebody and experiencing extreme frustration when you find yourself stuck in a road construction zone. Many of our natural inclinations are to ignore the posted signs that are standing between you and your destination. However, it is important to reconsider these inclinations despite how tremendously aggravating it is to be slowed down. Construction zones exist for many important safety reasons. Many people each year make poor choices in work zones and live (or don't live) to regret it. According to WorkZoneSafety.org, in 2008, 720 Americans were killed in work zone accidents, not to mention the non-fatal crashes that occur each year.

Construction zone accidents are most often caused by vehicles exceeding the appropriate speed in the designated zone. Not only are the people inside the vehicle at risk in these areas, but the construction zone workers who are out on the road are also in risk of their safety. An article on Buzzle.com explains that construction road workers have one of the most dangerous jobs in terms of fatality rates. The California Department of Transportation offers these construction zone tips:

• Follow the speeds posted in the designated zone.

• Remain alert and free of distractions.

• Be aware of your surroundings and any workers or people out on the road.

• Do not allow yourself to be distracted within your car. Do not talk on the phone and above all, do not text!

• Turn on your headlights so that your vehicle is easily spotted.

• Be diligent and considerate of the rules of the road, avoid tailgating and abrupt lane changes.

The US Department of Transportation states that motorists often fail to consider their vehicles are not only driving above speed limits, but are also in very close proximity to road workers. Speed is discussed as being the number one cause of construction zone accidents. However, as previously stated, construction workers are not the only ones at risk when it comes to construction zone accidents. Drivers also need to be mindful of the fact that while the workers have a dangerous job, according to another article on WorkZoneSafety.org, surprisingly, vehicle occupants are the most common victims of construction accidents.

Unfortunately, increasing work zone fines has failed to prevent poor driving habits in work zones and have not lessened fatalities. The addition of rumble strips and electronic speed displays have also had no notable impact on drivers. The presence of a police officer stationed in marked police cars at the construction sites have been the only measure that has had a marked impact; however, because of staff shortages, having a police officer and squadron car at every construction zone is unrealistic.
